Laguna won't lock -faulty door sensor?

My Laguna will not lock. Both key fobs have working, sound batteries, but when the dorrs are shut they cannot activate the locks. When the driver's door is open, and the fob clicked, the rear doors lock and then unlock in quick succession. The central console button activates the locks successfully. When meddling with the driver door catch, I did, for one glorious moment, get the lock to work again, but then it wouldn't unlock it!! I suspect a sensor in the driver door. Can anyone help?
Also, as a temporary security move although I can manually lock the doors, the hatchback door (this is a 1.6 sport hatchback) cannot be locked (thus making a mockery of the manual locking anyway) - or does anyone know different?
