i changed my head unit to an after market one, and made up an extension cable to run iso connectors up behind the dash, use a pair of iso stereo pins to release it from the cage and it is possible to get your hands in underneath to disconnect the plug, although I just took the boot apart to give me more room, and also to tuck the wiring out in place nice and neatly, then I ran it up the side of the car, took the plastic trims up from the bottom of the door shuts. i'm presuming you have a high spec car, If so there is a connector under the handbrake, unclip and remove the top of the centre console that will connect to the cars inbuilt phone kit, I have a nokia kit plumbed in, I had to put a microphone in, but there is a speaker to the lower right of the steering wheel( if your car has Nav or the voice computer).
Good Luck
