Don't worry about it.
With a good battery the car should unlock a few paces away. It will work better through the back window as the key plip is an infr-red transmitter (like on a TV remote) and the back window of the Megane is in line with the reciever in the roof of the car. It doesn't always work perfectly as its an IR system as you have to be in line-of-sight of the reciever and the signal isn't blocked by something like bright sunlight etc. The reciever in the car is that black plastic half rugby ball shaped thing in the roof panel above the gear selector.
I'd say definately change the battery and if that doesn't help then it could be a duff key which is not good news. Your local dealer will be able to change the battery for you (it probably says to do so in the handbook) but be aware that they'll charge you enough for the priviledge!
