If its a diesel, the drain on the battery would not be so great. Avoid cranking wherever possible and avoid using heavy electrical consumers like heated rear screen, windows etc.

Van with no PAS, column will take a lot of additional strain, I cannot envisage damage to other steering parts though.

Would suggest you do not drive. I can imagine that your insurance company would take a very dim view of driving without PAS in the event you had a prang.

Remember that old vehicles without PAS had a steering different geometry to vehicles fitted with PAS.
