I used to have a 1999 megane as described above with the fuel computer option.

Problems started and the stalk buttin would occationally not work. Eventually got worse and from time to time on cold wet mornings the instrument cluster would co crazy (i.e. all needles stepping up and down). next journey is was generally fine.

The problem is that there is a loose connection in the wire that carries the switch signal. Sometimes it would make contact all on its own, sometimes not at all and sometimes as ignition was turned on (forcing cluster into test mode - see above).

Suggest you remove the top cover on the steering column (torx screws underneath) and look for a 1mm ish diameter brown wire the emerges ar the very base of the stalk, this carries the signal from the stalk button. In my case it had become detached from connector block. With a bit of creative reconstruction I soldered in a repair and all was well.
