It could be the gearbox sensor,or it could be the speedo it's self.They can be a little delicate if they are disturbed,so it could be that it was damaged when the unit was changed.

Out of interest,was the dash unit changed complete,or did it just have a speedo?.It could be that it was just the background was changed to enable it to be read in miles,and the unit was damaged when this was done.
