The system has a gyroscope to detect changes in direction. This is initialised by driving in a particular direction along roads on the map.
Once set the direction that the car is pointing can be tracked.
Back to your problem.
The red satellite icon indicates that the system is not getting GPS data. Normally this is caused by a failed GPS antennae or broken wiring or connector. The GPS coax goes to the unit mounted in the glove box.
If you've had the climate panel out you may have dislodged this cable.
