As you say the TPS on the diesel fly-by-wire refers to the acelerator pedal wheerby it is quite different to that on petrol some engines - what they mean is that it's gizmo that measures the position of the accelerator pedal itself (not anything on the engine) and converts it into an electrical signal to the ECU . Have you checked out the EGR valve - the noise you hear coukld be worrying - have a close look at the turbo control pipes etc., also have a gander at the crankshaft pulley as they can come apart.
