thanks for the quick replies and advice. that picture shows exactly the same setup that i have.
(hopefully) i have attached your picture with some additions.
the red circle, that little pip like thing, i cant get that to sit on the trailing edge brake.
the blue/green circle shows the adjuster nut, i have tried to adjust this by hand and it wont move. the main spring is really tight. there is a little fixture that sits over the shaft of the adjuster and sits in a groove on the movable shaft body. (i have no clue what these things are called) the fixture is pulled out of the groove that it sits in when i manually adjust the nut. should i leave the self adjuster alone. i turned it so it is all the way in. so the adjuster shaft is at its shortest, if that makes sense. i have left it like this. i will try the other things that you all have suggested.
