Should be a one piece bearing carrier, two inner tapers, and a ring/clip in the centre to hold both halves together.
The inner taper bearing will have jammed on his stub axle, and the seal will be behind this.
As long as he pushes the two halves back into the centre clip and does not jam the centre clip between the taper bearings then he will be ok
