That is something I've done for as long as I can remember.
Can't remember when or who showed me but think it was from before I got a car of my own.
Especially useful when changing a wheel at the side of the road and relying on the car jack (and jacking points)
Take the spare out, jack car up, slide spare under
Remove old wheel, swap with spare
Spare on. Wheel out, lower jack.

Number of times I've driven past people rooting about in the boot fetching the spare out while the car is balanced on a single column sill jack and the old tyre is propped against the kerb ....
