I'm a little unclear from what you're saying whether you've seen the side lights going on or off, or whether the car's telling you they're faulty when you can't see a fault.
If it's the latter, then there's two favourite causes for this:
1) Number plate lights. They're on the side light circuit and the car will warn you about them if they're faulty, but they're easy to overlook.
Ive had a faulty number plate light before and the voice synth does indeed tell you when it is faulty. That was intermittent too.... one day she (the car) would nag me and the next day she wouldnt. I changed the bulb in the end. Im sure the voice synth said "fault with number plate illumination" though not the sidelights .... she was very specific if I remember rightly...lol.
Strangley though the voice synth didnt tell me when one of my Xenon bulbs stopped work not long ago....
