Hi Tri - was the battery the sealed type or has it vented removal caps - it may also be worth checking out the alternator because if it is over charging the battery can over spill and cause damage - personally I am not certain that battery covers are a good idea as they tend to hide problems as you describe. Was there any sign of water ingress at the fuses when you thumped them - if so it may well be worth checking the sunroof drain pipes which if blocked can cause water to run down the A-pillar and into through the fuse box. It is aslo a good idea to spread some vaseline around the battery terminals which reduces the risk of the dreaded white beard.
