hi bloke, i know it's been a while since this was posted but it may help others, to check the valves you have to remove the cylinder head and look at the valves to see if they are seating in the head, if they don't close fully when the camshaft is turned then i'm afraid the valves are bent and the valve stem guides may also be damaged, a friend and myself stripped out the head of my 1997 1.2 clio rl today in about five hours and it will take the same to rebuild it, so at least two or three days with the friendly garage ££££££££,, but it will cost me less than £150 for the parts (valves, seals, gasket set etc) to put it back together, so if you can do the job yourself or have a friendly grease monkey go for it,,cheers and good luck
