I've had the same problem with the key. Wife explained that it would take up to 10 times to press the button to lock/unlock the car. Very intermittent operation.
I checked the battery - it was OK. Red LED would light up OK when the button was pressed.
When I opened the key, I found that the IR LED had one leg that was broken away from the PCB (it's the black LED, which sends the infra-red message to the receiver). Obviously there's enough slight movement every time you press the button that after 1000 presses or so the solder cracks. It was easily fixed with a soldering iron. I presume that it would have cost me >£100 if I'd asked the dealer to fix the problem. They don't repair, they just replace
