It's true most mechanics can't communicate what they mean to the average Joe. Its probably best to read up on forums and your Haynes manual before you go to the garage.
Spot on Steve! I do this all the time and sometimes I leave the mechanics open-mouthed. I'm very outspoken, so to save any embarassement (for both the mechanic and myself!), I always arm myself with as much information (mainly to make them think I know more than i actually do
The other thing to do is stick with them when you find a good one. I have 4 I'd recommend all local to me depending on the type of work involved
