Simple Laguna II electric handbrake question

Ok, here's one for fellow Lag 2 users

The electric handbrake - mine deactivates when you rev the car in neutral, which i wasn't expecting.

Interestingly, it won't do it with the clutch depressed - it's almost as if the car thinks it's in gear rather than neutral

Is this how it's supposed to work?

If not, anyone else come across this behavior? I would have assumed that if there was a switch somewhere to monitor whether the car is in gear - where would that be?

Currently in emperor_ming's garage:
2010 Scenic Priv CVT. 2005 Laguna II 2.0 16v, 2006 Laguna II 2.0 16v
