Hmm, I see where you're coming from, but you can pick up later Mk1 Focuses (Foci?) which i'd consider as roughly equivalent to a Mk2 Megane for a song, although the Megane continued a few years later then the Focus, so there may be an age trade off as you rightly mention.

To answer the question as it stands though, i'd choose the Clio. The MPG will be better by virtue of the weight, insurance should be less, handier for doing delivery work and easier to sell later on.
