I once had a 1996P 2.5dT Safrane Automatic which had the "Gearbox operating in safety mode" fault. Took it to the Renault Dealers and they wanted £2800 for a new gearbox - I could have bought the car again for that.. twice. Took it to an auto-gearbox specialist who said it was either the transmission
or a solenoid switch. I personally would not recommend anyone to buy a pre-1997 Safrane, as the Aisin Warner transmission used in the facelifted model is much less problematic than the Renault unit that was previously used.
