Get a job closer to home - no matter what time of life spending 20 hours a week driving (in all honesty its unpaid work) is going to play havoc with your health, etc. In my younger day I used to commute to work until one day I sat down and worked out what exactly I was earning an hour. I had a forty hour work week but when I added the travel times of 20 plus hours - I was actually getting well below the minimum wage. But if you have to - maintaining the car in good condition and keeping you maximum speed to around 55 mph - and avoiding heavy accleeration is about all you can do. Also get rid of any unneccessary luggage in the car. Have you tried advertising for car sharing.
