The oddest car I have ever owned
I have now had a Vel Satis for a little over a year, and I can safely say it's the oddest car I have ever had - and I've had all sorts in 40 years of motoring.
It is superb at high speed cruising (so long as there's no cross wind), but dreadful around town. The basic parts (engine, gearbox, etc) seem pretty reliable, but some key ancilliary items (such as the wheels) are dreadful. And Renault service - that's just a joke!
When I first got the car, I discovered the aircon wasn't working. My local Renault dealer fixed it (at great expense and only by removing most of the front of the car - they admitted they had never worked on a VS before). Subsequent problems with windows winding down of their own accord (not fixed) and reports of "hundreds of faults logged on the computer - but we don't know what they all mean" took me to a different dealer (who had been a Vel Satis specialist when Renault UK still imported the car) for the first major "routine" service - that resulted in a list of faults so long they had to use up half the forest reserves of Norway! Included among them was the "wheels not round" problem - they do that, soft alloy, speed bumps probably cause it, etc.
Anyway, since Renault and their dealers cannot properly service the Vel Satis in the UK, I've decided that I'm going to take mine to a friendly French dealer in future - one who still sells them. Maybe that way I'll get the faults fixed by someone who actually cares about the car - and Renault's reputation
