I hope you are wrong about there being a caged nut, although I am not too optimistic.

A caged nut means they are missing and I have a bigger problem that I first thought. At least if it is just a threaded hole in the steel all I need is a bigger bolt.

Although thinking about it, if the worst comes to the worst, I could just force a larger bolt into it so it threads itself on the steel.

Good idea about the expanding fixings like you use on plasterboard etc. I had not thought about that. Definately worth bearing in mind as a last resort.

I am very tempted to take it to the dealer in the morning and see what they say. I certainly have no urge to lay under the car again in this weather - I had to stop after 10 minutes because I couldn't use my fingers!
