Thanks. It was a dodgy earth strap. All sorted!
first of all I would check the earth strap from the gearbox to the body. These are an extremely common problem. When the start to corrode its a hit or a miss when trying to start the car and usually just makes clicking noises when trying to start, like the problem you are having. Easy way to check it, connect a jump lead from the negative terminal of the battery to a clean part of the engine and try to start it. If it starts, you know what the problem is
Many thanks for that advice stef123. Although I couldn't actually find an earth strap to check (or the starter, for that matter!), the jump lead trick worked - though it got a bit warm!
Have now added two more earth straps from body to engine using 10mm electrical earth cable and the sort of earth clamps that attach the cable to the bottom of central heating radiators. Heath Robinson? Maybe - but it works fine.
Once again, thanks for your help. Wife can now go and collect the Kids from school!
