Wing mirrors and electric windows

Hi all,

The other day my drivers side window started inching up and down, and it sounded like a cable was grating inside.

Today I folded my electric wing mirrors in and used the drive through car wash at my local petrol station.
When it came to putting the windows back out, only the passenger side would move!!!

I have changed the fuse for the windows but to no avail.
I have taken the drivers side window to bits to make sure it is dry (as a piece of the plastic casing was out of place on the bottom half of the mirror).
When I put the mirror back together, none of the windows worked!!!
I went back out an hour later and now the passenger side works occasionally.

My god.........any ideas?
