Rainbow's T1100 Radiator

Anyway, I have a problem today. Had seen a couple of dark spots under the engine a few days ago. On inspection they turned out to be watery but no signs of a leak anywhere so didn't worry too much. (it's the 1721 F1N)

I suspected overheating (gauge hovering just below the tightly spaced lines) on a short journey (3 miles) on Sunday so today let the engine idle for 10 minutes today to see if the fan kicked in. It didn't while the engine was running and the gauge crept up to the same spot again. Switched off engine and fan came to life - reducing temp. - as hoped for.

I then started the van up to see if the fan stayed on. It didn't and shortly after that, brown sludgy water began to drip out of the hose(s) (there are 2: one short linking hose and one larger hose with a sharp return in it from the radiator but couldn't make out which) where the bottom radiator hose meets the block. I switched off immediately, of course. It was less than half a pint before stopping and was accompanied by a gurgling sound coming from somewhere behind the dipstick.

Is this likely just to be a perished hose? I'll replace them anyway (are they easily obtainable?) but then what? Presumably this was coolant so what is recommended and how to do it?

I have obtained the Peter Russek manual (in pieces) but it's not exactly easy to follow.

Any help much appreciated.

Re: RWs Trafic T1100 Camper making it a bit better

Hi Rainbow

Would you mind starting a brand new thread with your van problems ... I just want to keep this thread as a diary of progress with my van over time.
There Ya Go RW, TS Priveledges
But in response to your cooling system I would change the thermostat (see page 3 of this thread) and flush the system thoroughly. If the thermostat has failed and is remaining closed it may be causing extra pressure within the system which is causing leaks at the joints of the water hoses.

I'm sure your cooling fan is working ok but its easy to fit a new sender unit on the radiator if you think it needs changing, which you might as well do when the system is drained.

HTH

Re: Rainbow's T1100 Radiator

Thanks for moving thread.

Thanks also, RW. I've read page 3 and that all makes sense for my van too. Could you give me a link to said thermostat, please, and what coolant did you use?

I have the exact same split in my engine breather pipe too (post #20) - it's like my van is yours in a parallel universe! I suppose an internet search will reveal a source for that blue pipe you used. Maybe I should go for another colour so I don't appear to be stalking your renovations!

Many thanks,

Rainbow.

I mainly use either Mister Auto or EuroCarParts for standard spares ... they are both comparable in prices and excellent delivery service.

Universal Blue anti-freeze in concentrate so I can mix it myself. Buy 5litre of Distilled water too.

from AP Motorsports 12mm or 13mm internal bore silicon tube (in all colours ). They have a main website and on ebay too (I got a cheap offcut from them).
Hi again Rainbow .. I've just had to give brief answers as I off to work shortly. If you need extra info I'll have more time tomorrow.

Re: Rainbow's T1100 Radiator

Thanks RW,

Ordered the coolant thermostat and got red concentrated coolant and distilled water as that was what was in it - local garage say it's fine. Will update when job done.

To clarify - forgive ignorance:

The fan ought to come on when the engine runs hot but doesn't as the sensor is broken. However, it did come on after engine was turned off - co-incidence? Just happened to swich off at the precise temperature it should kick in?
