Renault new car pricing policy?

I'm looking at buying a renault new. I've just been speaking to somone from an online supplier and he was saying that on the old Lagunas they were getting almost a 1/3 off the list price becuase they were being replaced.

This meant that a 2.0dci initale laguna 2 was £16200 vs £18200 for the new model of the same spec.

What i'd like to know is - do car manufacturers release a car with a high list price and then gradually reduce it or does it stay pretty much the same untill its replaced?
