There are one or two posts on the forum about brake light switches but don't think it's too common. If you can find the switch then yes it can be done at home. Trouble is the switch is usually located just above the brake pedal and requires three arms and to be triple jointed to be able to see it and adjust.
If you are lucky enough to be triple jointed then by all means have a go.
