If you haven't already got them off-
On some cars you can see the handbrake lever through the wheel bolt holes.
With handbrake off, the part circled in the picture should sit against the egde of the brake shoe.
If it isn't against the shoe, try slackening the handbrake cable and see if it help.
If it don't help- try pushing that arm towards the back plate and in the direction of the arrow at the same time
That might let the arm slip behind the shoe which then allows the shoes to move toward each other.
You can do the same on reassembly to get the drum over the shoe if there is a lip on the drum.
Just pull the handbrake on and the arm will return to it's proper position.
Note- there will need to be plenty of slack in the handbrake cable to allow this method to work and not all shoe types will do it.
