Had a look today and I think I've fixed it (for now).

The cable that keeps popping out (near side) is actually working fine (apart from popping out that is). This cable looked shorter because it is fully retracting whereas the longer cable is sticking at the caliper end.

I've freed this off using wd40 and plusgas, as well as turning the bracket which holds both cables around. Both cables retract fully now and the bracket is more or less square now as I guess it should be.

The offside cable is still very slightly lazy but not enough to allow the other side cable to pop out. I might need to revisit this if it happens again but so far so good.

Incidently, the bracket that holds both cables can be bought separately at 22 plus VAT (or maybe it was inclusive - can't remember) however the adjuster is part of the whole handbrake assembly.
