Unhappy Central locking problem

My nearside passenger door (on the fuel filler side) sometimes remains locked and cannot be opened from inside the car. While driving, the central locking sometimes clunks 1, 2 or more times by itself then afterwards I sometimes find that the nearside passenger door then locks/unlocks OK. Is this something to do with the fuel cap - so that if you remove the fuel cap the rear door is supposed to lock? If the car is unlocked and I remove the fuel cap then I would expect the rear door on the fuel cap side to lock - but it doesn't. I am wondering if I have got a fuel cap sensor problem. I have tried cleaning the 3 door contacts on the offending door. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
