Thanks for the reply! Well, I had it booked in for tomorrow, but had to take it in to a local dealer today, as I had problems getting in to work.

It seems to be stuck in (3rd?) gear (it's an automatic). The guy at the dealer is going to do some pressure/hydraulics testing on it today, but if it's a new gearbox that's needed then I may as well start looking for a new car, as it would cost more than the car is worth to get it replaced.

Could it be something like low gearbox oil ? The dealer said it sounded as though it went into 'safety mode'.

I think it may be time I learned to drive a manual.

Generally speaking, are manual gearboxes more reliable than automatic gearboxes? Or does it not make that much difference in modern cars?
