I wouldn't call 15 years plus recent in motoring terms - many cars without air-con also have them but from my experience very few garages bother changing them during service. Pollen filter isn't their proper term - they are known as cabin filters. I can remember the old days when dead leaves used to get gobbled up into the heating ducts and the wheeze and whine would drive you crazy and apart from dismantling the sytem you had to live with it
