You all seem to have the opposite problem to what I had with my 205 - the light was the only reliable meter as to what was left in the tank, as sometimes I'd switch the ignition off with half a tank left and find 1/4 when I came back to the car, or the opposite. It was hopelessly inaccurate. I could have guessed how much fuel was in the tank and got it closer.

As others have said, I wouldn't recommend running the car for long with the light on though, or you'll be changing your fuel filter a lot!
