Well currently the pads have about 4mm on each one so plenty of life left in them but I have a set of new pagid pads going spare so decided to install them and they would then last the life of the car as far as we intend to keep it. I took the old ones out and cleaned everything up, it all seems to work fine with nothing corroded in place so no sticking pistons etc. Perhaps I am just not strong enough to use the draper cube thingy to push and rotate them back in.

the draper cube thing sounds like just the foot part that turns piston ? the tool is normally 2 or 3 parts consisting of the foot (cube thingy!) a plate that pushes against caliper and a threaded bar to turn foot

and just to add confusion to this some say right hand thread and some say left hand thread in diferent threads - i think google may be your friend here
