Might be worth checking everything with a different garage. Problem is if it's not driveable I suppose

There is such an issue revolving around removing these pipes that it is unlikely you will find a second-hand one anywhere... annoying

Any more details/ideas?

I have a very similar problem with a Laguna I... 1996 1.8RT Sport.

Needed to replace the PAS rack due to failure. That same pipe would not come loose at the rack end, common problem apparently (no doubt due to the complete lack of protection from the elements via the drivers wheelarch, nice one Renault ) so needed to break it to remove it and now need a new pipe.

Renault quoted 153ish... a ridiculous price

I think it is false economy to pay that sort of money considering the rack is a similar amount. That totals half or more of what the car is worth...

Further details on how you resolved this would be welcome.
