Biggest issue I seem to have with shoes is getting that little washer onto the pin while compressing the springs.
Like circlip firing, it is a depressing sport hunting around the drive for the little bu66ers.
There is a special tool for removing and fitting the hold down spring washers. Bought one around 10 years ago as like you I was fed up chasing them around the garage floor. It has saved me hours of time over the years and I bought it for £5-00. I have seen similar tools made from modifying an old tubular box spanner.
