I was watching a video which shows along the back axel there is a slider which the cables fit. this seems to fit together using lugs. there are two and one seems to catch in the slide rail where you fit it in locking on the handbrake.
the video wasn't in English, so a good old guess work and human body language. it was clearly showing issues with this sliding and water/rust damage across the part. hope that helps, that video link is helpful.

I think I would have spun up the motor on that part when the motor was removed to check it, its geared there will be resistance, the circuit looks like its a resistive circuit to switch off, where any tight points will trigger the motor to stop.

Also just looking at the motors they are cheap!
