So your car thinks it's a 1990 Ford Sierra now does it? (Sorry, it was a very common fault on certain Fords.)

You're right to suspect a bad earth. These are the classic symptoms. If it's similar to the Lagunas of the same era, there will be a wire from the multiplug that goes straight to the vehicle body close to the lamp cluster. Check that this is tightly bolted to the vehicle body for starters. If that doesn't help, then try cleaning the contacts on the multiplug and the connector on the back of the lamp.
