Hi Gareth - your warning regarding health and safety is bang on - an active carbon filter is the lowest spec you should use and at that it should be a good fitting one (remember it has a fixed life-span of around 6-8 hours use)Some modern synthetics paints can kill within an hour or so if inhaled - never mind the long-term affects if it doesn't. Yeh and people whinge at the cost of car spraying - yet if they knew the risks many wouldn't even consider it as a career. Just to add to your point regarding flexible additive - theres no point in adding it to the top coat only - all undercoats and primers need it as well. It is also recommended to have some adhesion promoter in the first coat to ensure the paint doesn't slide off if you brake hard
Anyone who says painting cars properly is easy have a lot to learn I'm afraid. A difficult and dangerous profession unfortunately - the manufacturers didn't introduce robots for no reason

Flexible additive should be added throughout all the layers !
When I was getting my NVQ in college in Autocraft I was luckily enought to use a booth to spray some panels up. Even though we had air fed resperators the smell was still present ever so slightly and its bloomin hot in there !!
I will back up what has been posted above, spraing is an art form and is not an easy task to do !
