You DO Need diagnostics, as without It The car doesn't KNOW the piston has been wound back. All it knows, is that it's moved & It didn't do it.
So whilst it can be done mechanically. IMHO one still needs a diagnostic. But at least your way, it's only one trip to the garage, if you don't own a reset computer.
