If you go ahead with the threaded bar idea, use some heat when you bend it. If you bend it cold, you could induce some cracking at the root of the threads (depending on the grade of metal)
It might be an idea to find a small engineering shop in your area. They would probably bend you a set out of sheet steel, and weld on a nut at each end to bolt through at a reasonable cost.
