You are wasting your time trying to test a battery with a multi-meter - it needs to be load tested. The condition of a battery isn't determined purely by its voltage but on how long it can deliver a given current for a certain period of time. If you stick 8 "AA" bateries together you will get a reading of 12 volts but it sure wouldn't start an engine. Most decent battery suppliers will do a free load test in the hope of a sale. To be sure - the battery should be tested at least 3 times in succession.
