I fitted my own towbar (non-detachable) last year and a Lag II Sports Tourer, supplied by Towsure, and it was an absolute doddle to fit. The electrics were the most complex bit (but not particularly difficult) and I could only find blue Scotchblocks in the local car parts dealers which won't fit on the wiring in the car. I chose to use terminal strips ( 'choccy block' ), which have been fine so far.

In terms of the 'blown bulb detecting module', I believe it is a UK VOSA requirement to have an audible or visual indicating device that operates when a trailer is connected, which will also indicate when the wiring isn't working. These only work, however, on the indicators and not on the tail / stop lamps.
