The dealer didn't need the code from inside the key. They just looked it up from the vin number. I was suprised that they didn't want proof of ownership, but I guess that I told a believable story and I looked honest enough.
The only way the code would be of use to a thief is if they either has a pysical copy of the key (without the electronics), or if they could open the door and defeat the steering/ignition lock (Which is probably trivial for a decent car thief).
Currently in NickPick's garage:
1997 Renault Megane Classic 2.0 RXE, but still prefers his old Audi Coupe and Lancia Delta HF Turbos.
