I've got to be honest, I would view this as a 'heads-up' and either sell the car now (with some MOT), or wait until it fails, and break it for parts.
If there has been one previous owner that's been a bodger, that in itself would put me off throwing money at it, trying to reverse the damage that they have caused.
At the end of the day, it's an old car, with a very high mileage (cambelt change due?), and you have to ask yourself - has it been loved?
If the answer is no, don't keep it - it will cost you many times more than what you paid for it - and still be worth less than the purchase price.
If you sell it now, you'll only lose a hundred or so.
Thanks a lot for that viewpoint. Has it been loved? If by that you mean taken on a number of surf trips, I'd say yes
I wouldn't even have the first clue how to sell something like this - the receipt I got from the garage even says "customer advised not to drive".
