I think I have made some progress on this problem.

This afternoon I removed the rear lamp trims inside the car, checked the wire attached to the car body (I take this to be the earth/ground cable?) which which looked clean and secure on both sides. I then removed the rear bulb holders and also the multi-plug from each bulb holder. One side looks as though the pins are a bit bent and the other side looks OK. With both rear lights disconnected, I tested the tail, brake, side lights, indicators, etc. Although nothing shows up on the lamps (obviously) the dash display, side repeaters and front indicators (all be it flashing fast because 2 are missing) all behaved normally and the rear fog lamp symbol did not appear when pressing the brake pedal.

So I'm hoping 2 new rear bulb holders from my local friendly Renault dealer will solve the problem completely.
