Red batterry light

Been out in 1999 clio RN 1.2 all day,all fine, stopped for an hour and on restart the battery warning light came on and stayed on had to drive about 10 miles home and all went ok although the light stayed on the whole way. Got home and put a meter across the battery with engine running and only showed 12v. Switched off and tested and still 12v. went to start up again and there wasn't enough to turn engine over.Is this the alternater?why did the battery discharge in an instant?and how painful is the cost of a new alternater if needed?
