Usually the battery light comes on with ignition but goes off when the engine is started. If it stays on it's normally telling you that the alternator isn't charging the battery.

Some modern cars use a bit of power from the battery when running but the alternator is throwing out plenty to cover it. If you've been running without charging it's highly likely that your battery will have discharged a bit (amount will depend on whether you were using lights/heater etc).

Have your alternator checked - as previously stated it should show more voltage when running than not.
