hi really need help having a new engine fitted and the so called mechanic has started the engine with no gear box oil in it and I think this has damaged the box he has said it will be ok because its not been put in gear help needed before I pay him any money as I think he is wrong

Why was the gearbox oil drained? Did he remove the driveshafts? I cannot remember if the gearbox input shaft rotates when the box is in neutral. Maybe someone will know

Eevn when in neutral the gear train inside the gearbox will be rotating. Running with no lube is not good but it will also depend on for how long it has been running. I have seen gearboxes run without oil for up to 30 minutes in neutral without any serious lasting affects.

The problem is that any damge may not become apparent for a couple of thousand miles or so.

The gearbox will still be rotating internally even without being in gear. Without and oil in there depending on how long it was running for and how hot the gearbox got could cause some serious damage. But as others have said the damage may not become apparent untill a couple of thousand miles down the line. Best to request some kind of guarantee against failure within a certain time frame say a month or 2. Other than that I don't suppose there is much you could do about it.

Just IMHO, OK but there'll still be oil adhering to the gears and bearings so if not actually driven, thereby putting a load on it, can't see that there should be a problem. (?)

It doesnt sound like best practice, but probably depends on the circumstances..like why was there no oil in there.. what was being done.. n so on perhaps you could give a little more detail?
Like why would he even mention that to you, was it.
"yeh the brand new engine starts fine, now weel refill the gearbox oil and reconnect everything else"
In a situation like that..and maybe the clutch was depressed for the whole "engine test"?,shouldnt do any harm, cos of the residual oil as mentioned above.

If it was a gearbox rebuild/similar and so on,might be different, but I dunno if you could say "no money for you" right off.

Any other info/probs with the job?
