Megane Mk3 1.5 dCi 5th gear whistle (5 speed) **Fixed**

Hi,

I recently purchased a 2010 Megane and I didn't get up to 5th gear on the test drive. Love the car to bits but it's whistling in 5th - it's a little crunchy to get it into 5th, makes a short squeak noise like the whistle, then whistles during acceleration. All other gears are fine.

We took the cap off the gearbox and saw that one of the plastic covers on the selector arm had been damaged. We hunted down one from the scrap yard and replaced it, topping up the gearbox oil as we went (Not from the scrap yard).

This didn't fix the whistle. Any ideas?

Following up with my solution and I can't find a way to edit the original post, so apologies for bumping.
Not possible after 20 mins since submittal. No apologies necessary
The reverse switch had come loose and gearbox oil had leaked out, and 5th gear is the first one to run dry. Without any lubrication the teeth on that gear had worn quite badly and that was causing the noise. Managed to replace just that gear with one from a similar gearbox that is very slightly more efficient but not designed for use with this engine. Done >3K miles with that setup without any problems.
